Serena Williams was left rueing her own performance after being beaten by Bianca Andreescu in the US Open final.

  • US Open: Bianca Andreescu defeats Serena Williams in final

Serena Williams remains stuck on 23 Grand Slam titles after losing the US Open final to Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu.

Williams has now lost the last four Grand Slam finals she has been in having last tasted success at the Australian Open in 2017.

She was beaten 6-3 7-5 by Andreescu with the teen sensation picking up her maiden Grand Slam title.

It could have been worse for Williams though. The American, who was being watched by friend Meghan Markle, bounced back from 5-1 down in the second set to get the set back on serve.

Though Andreescu broke in the 12th game of the set to break Williams’ heart as the 38-year-old chases Margaret Court’s record tally of 24 Major titles.

She said: “Definitely disappointing. I felt like I could have done so many things a little bit better.

“I’m not necessarily chasing a record. I’m just trying to win Grand Slams. It’s definitely frustrating, you know.

“But for the most part I just am still here. I’m still doing what I can do.

“I definitely can say that I’m not really happy, but I have to, like, take it one moment at a time.

“I honestly didn’t play my best today. I could have played better. That’s the only solace that I can take right now.”

The win for Andreescu caps off a meteoric rise over the past 12 months or so.

The 19-year-old was ranked 208th in the world just over a year ago. But after an impressive season, she was No 15 going into the US Open having won Indian Wells earlier this year.

And the Canadian is living in dreamland having beaten her idol.

“This year has been a dream come true,” Andreescu said.

“I am beyond grateful and truly blessed. I’ve worked really hard for this moment. To play on this stage against Serena – a true legend of the sport – is amazing.”

For Williams, the end is surely nearing. She turns 38 later this month and was looking to replicate her first ever Grand Slam victory.

Williams won at Flushing Meadows back in 1999 but insists she’s not thinking of giving up yet.

She added: “I’m not necessarily chasing a record. I’m just trying to win Grand Slams.

“It’s definitely frustrating, you know. But for the most part I just am still here. I’m still doing what I can do.”

Reports recently suggested that Williams’ 2019 season would be over following the US Open.

It means the 37-year-old intends to skip the season-ending WTA Finals in Shenzhen and all eyes will be on January’s Australian Open.
