Anambra State Independent Power Generating Company Limited In Concept

While an “Anambra State Independent Power Generating Company Limited” does not currently exist, the Anambra State government has been actively moving to domesticate power generation and create a state-level electricity market. The name may be a proposed future entity, as the state government is now legally empowered to legislate on electricity matters.

Background on Anambra’s Move Toward Independent Power

  • Enabling legislation: In late 2024, the Anambra State Electricity Bill was before the state’s House of Assembly. This bill is the basis for the state’s plans to take full ownership of its power generation and establish its own regulatory agencies.
  • New regulatory body: In June 2025, the Anambra State Executive Council approved the creation of the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASEREC). This new body will be responsible for overseeing the generation and regulation of power within the state.
  • Goal: The state aims to have a domesticated power generation system by 2025 to improve supply and reduce reliance on the unreliable national grid. This is part of Governor Charles Soludo’s strategy to drive industrial development.

Other Power Projects in Anambra

While there is no existing state-owned generating company, several other projects and initiatives are relevant to power in Anambra:

  • Century Power Generation (CPG): This indigenous company is developing a 1500MW gas-fired power plant in phases in Okija, Anambra State. CPG obtained a generation license from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for the project.
  • Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC): This company is responsible for electricity distribution in Anambra and other southeastern states. The Anambra government has signed an MoU with EEDC to improve power supply and infrastructure.
  • Solar installations: Under the state’s “clean and green agenda,” solar power systems have been installed in government buildings and water facilities as an alternative power source.
Anambra State Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr Julius Mmelikam Chukwuemeka

In an implicit collaboration to the above development, the Anambra State Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Engr Julius Mmelikam Chukwuemeka has revealed that the state would domesticate power generation by 2025 as the successful passing of Anambra state Electricity Bill which is before the House of Assembly.

Chukwuemeka made this revelation while addressing the press after the Ministry’s 2025 Budget defense at the state assembly yesterday.

He noted that following the empowerments of states through the 2023 Electricity Amendment Act to legislate on their powers, the solution government has concluded plans for the domestication of power generation. The commissioner stated that once the bill is passed, the state Electricity Management Agency and other Regulatory Agencies would be established for the management & regulation of power which would see to more improved power supply in the state.

On Water supply, Mr Commissioner said that the solution government has returned pipe borne water supply in some major cities across the state in the first phase of the Statewide Water Resuscitation Project and that more cities & towns would be covered in the second phase as captured in the budget.
