President Tebboune weaponises digitisation on corruption

The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, highlighted the sharp decline in corruption in Algeria thanks to the success of the digitalization process, which has become a powerful weapon in combating the phenomenon and uncovering unlawful practices.

Speaking during his regular media interview with the representatives of the national press, broadcast Saturday evening on national television and radio channels, the President of the Republic said that corruption in Algeria has “shrunk considerably and is no longer widespread” as a result of the introduction of digitalization, which has made it possible to detect various abuses and unlawful practices.

He also noted that digitalization has helped “expose manipulations in various fields,” such as those that tainted the procedure for obtaining the state-guaranteed right to buy foreign currency.

President Tebboune further stressed that “corruption should be nonexistent,” warning of punishment for those who “believe they are smarter than those who were arrested for this type of practice.”

In this regard, he addressed several reasons behind certain individuals’ involvement in corruption, noting that a number of them “are pushed into it in order to weaken the State and hinder it from reaching its goals through unlawful practices, including undermining the foreign exchange reserves,” before stressing that the State will remain vigilant in confronting such practices.
