Brexit plan: Farage reveals only way Boris Johnson can get no-deal through parliament NIGEL FARAGE

Nigel Farage told the Tory leadership frontrunner he must send a strong message to the European Union to signal the UK is “serious” about leaving without a deal. Boris Johnson has pledged to deliver Brexit “with or without a deal” if he is elected Prime Minister but Mr Farage outlined a step-by-step guide on how to get a no deal. Speaking on his Sunday LBC show, the Brexit Party leader said: “This is what he has to do. He has to go to the house of commons and say ‘we, as an institution, our two big political parties, we are now losing the support and confidence of the country, not just in us as people, not just in us as parties, but actually the entire democratic system is now open to question.’

“We have to deliver Brexit, there is no other way of doing it than leaving on 31st October. I did give notice in Brussels that we are leaving on that date on WTO terms. I’ve told them we absolutely mean it.’

“‘I told them I’m coming to the House of Commons to ask for a majority on it and that, once that is done, it is common interests for the both of us to apply to the World Trade Organisation to act as an honest, willing broker, to use Article 24 of the GATT Treaty, to smooth the way and give us a couple of years to smooth everything out.'”

Early in the Tory leadership contest, Mr Johnson voiced his support to plans which would see Britain revert to WTO trade regulation to maintain the commercial relationship the UK and the EU have in the event of a no deal.He proposed the British Government apply Article 24 of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade which allows for tariff-free trade for up to 10 years while a permanent arrangement is being negotiated between London and Brussels.

Brexiteers have expressed their agreement at the plan but several experts have warned the UK would not be able to trigger the measure unless the EU also agreed to do so.

International Trade Secretary Dr Liam Fox also warned that a no deal Brexit would automatically remove Article 24 from the option list as an agreement to discuss trade in future has to be reached.

The European Union chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier has repeatedly warned Brussels would not agree to discuss the future trading relationship unless all outstanding issues, including the controversial Irish backstop, are resolved.

But Mr Farage told Mr Johnson expressing confidence would do the trick: “‘I have every confidence now they know we are serious they too will apply.’

“If in those circumstances the House of Commons votes him down, he loses a motion of confidence debate, he then goes to the country and does a deal with the Brexit Party, my guess is he would then have a landslide majority.”

Brexiteer MP Jacob Rees-Mogg last month welcomed the Brexit Party’s leader “genuine offer to help” the British Government deliver on Brexit.

Speaking to Mr Farage, the Tory backbencher said: “Your authority now in Brussels to explain to them what the situation is in the United Kingdom is enhanced by your election results.

“Of course, I want people who are in favour of Brexit to work together. I’m telling you I prefer that to trying to work with Jeremy Corbyn, which I thought was a daft idea.”

The Brexit Party has emerged as a significant political player over the last few months despite Mr Farage only launching the new political movement in April.

Candidates for the Brexiteer party secured 29 seats in the European Parliament in May’s election and polled first ahead of mainstream parties like Labour and Conservatives.
