‘Having a laugh!’ Corbyn humiliated as Express.co.uk readers savage chances of being PM

JEREMY CORBYN has suffered massive humiliation after Express.co.uk readers savaged any chance of him quickly ousting Boris Johnson and becoming the next Prime Minister.

  • Brexit: Jeremy Corbyn branded a ‘divisive figure’ by Swinson

The Labour Party leader has stepped up his pursuit of taking over at 10 Downing Street after writing to the Liberal Democrats, the SNP and rebel Tories in the hope of gaining enough support to oust Boris Johnson. He said he would call a no confidence vote in the Government, which would require majority support from the House of Commons, at the “earliest opportunity when we can be confident of success”.  Jeremy Corbyn wants to delay Brexit further by securing an extension to the Article 50 process, taking the UK past the October 31 deadline by which Mr Johnson has vowed to take Britain out of the European Union, “do or die”.

This Government has no mandate for no deal, and the 2016 EU referendum provided no mandate for no deal. I therefore intend to table a vote of no confidence at the earliest opportunity when we can be confident of success

Jeremy Corbyn

In the letter, he wrote: “This Government has no mandate for no deal, and the 2016 EU referendum provided no mandate for no deal.

“I therefore intend to table a vote of no confidence at the earliest opportunity when we can be confident of success.

“Following a successful vote of no confidence in the Government, I would then, as Leader of the Opposition, seek the confidence of the house for a strictly time-limited temporary government with the aim of calling a general election, and securing the necessary extension of Article 50 to do so.”

Mr Corbyn insisted Labour would campaign in a resulting general election for a second referendum on EU membership with the option to Remain being available to voters.

Jeremy Corbyn has been humiliated in an Express.co.uk poll

Boris Johnson has launched several scathing attacks against Jeremy Corbyn

But his plan has already hit the buffers after being met with strong opposition from the rival political parties.

Now, the Labour leader has suffered further humiliation, with Express.co.uk readers launching a scathing attack on any possibility of Mr Corbyn becoming the next Prime Minister.

An Express.co.uk poll, which ran from 12pm until 8pm on Thursday, August 15, asked: “Would you want Jeremy Corbyn to be Prime Minister?”

A huge 22,773 readers participated, with a massive 91.8 percent (20,915 people) voting “No, this would not be good”.

Jeremy Corbyn's no confidence vote in the government would require a majority in the Commons

Just 8.2 percent (1,858 readers) voted “Yes, what a great idea”.

Express.co.uk readers were quick to launch several stunning attacks against the prospect of Mr Corbyn unseating Mr Johnson as the country’s next Prime Minister.

One reader summed up the feeling of voters on our poll, by simply saying: “You are having a laugh!”

Another questioned how he can even be considered as the next Prime Minister, and said: “It beggars belief he is still even in politics. Completely unfit for purpose. “

Jo Swinson will not be supporting Jeremy Corbyn's plan

Several voters in the poll took a more humorous and sarcastic outlook on the question posed to them.

One said: “I would rather vote for a tin of baked beans, and I don’t like them much either!”

Another commented they would “rather stick red hot needles in my eyes”.

A third person added: “I would sooner vote for the Downing Street cat than Corbyn.”

One reader sarcastically urged other Express.co.uk visitors “don’t knock Corbyn” as he is the “unsung hero of Brexit”.

Is Jeremy Corbyn a Eurosceptic?

But revealing this true feelings, the reader said: “With Jeremy in charge of Labour, he pretty much guarantees that Remainers lose a vote of no confidence against Boris.

“In fact he has delayed a vote of no confidence to the point where it is almost meaningless.

“Where would we be without his ambivalence on Brexit over these last few years?

“If we get true Brexit, we owe a debt of gratitude to Mr Corbyn.”

Should Mr Corbyn win a no confidence vote in Mr Johnson and his Government, the Labour leader plans to delay Brexit, call a snap election and campaign for another referendum.

Dominic Grieve cast doubt over Jeremy Corbyn's latest plan

But in a major blow, Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson said she would not be backing Mr Corbyn’s push to become Prime Minister.

Responding to his offer, she attacked his plan as not being “viable” because he does not have the required support among other MPs in Parliament.

Tory rebel and former Attorney General Dominic Grieve warned a national unity government led by Mr Corbyn was a “most unlikely way forward”.

He told BBC Radio 4 a caretaker Prime Minister “has got to be somebody who can inspire trust”.

Mr Grieve added: “Seeing Jeremy Corbyn’s history, it’s difficult to see how he could possibly be in a position to do such a thing.”
