‘Last chance to save Brexit’ Boris Johnson warns voters of ‘chaos’ under Labour

BORIS JOHNSON today warns Daily Express readers that Thursday’s general election is the “last chance” to save Brexit. In an exclusive interview, the Prime Minister admits the race for Downing Street is “very, very close” with just three days to go until polling day.

He insists that getting the UK out of the EU at last can unleash “a golden age of investment and growth” that could boost the economy by £150billion and “bring the country together” after years of division. But he also pledges to fight for every vote until polls close to save the country from more Brexit delay and the economic chaos of a Jeremy Corbyn-led hard-Left Labour government. “Thursday is the last chance, not only to save Brexit but also to save this country from chaos. It’s a choice between progress and chaos, as simple as that,” the Prime Minister says.

“It’s a choice between resolution, harmony, moving forward or going backwards, acrimony and division.”

Mr Johnson spoke to the Daily Express during a visit to the Tories main general election phone bank centre where dozens of party activists were yesterday calling voters around the country in the effort to maximise support.

In a wide-ranging interview, he spoke of his girlfriend Carrie Symonds had been a “massive support” to his campaign and mocked Mr Corbyn’s confusion about whether he watched the Queen’s Speech on Christmas Day.

With polling day tantalisingly close, the Prime Minister was passionate about the Tories’ need to still win over millions of voters who have still not yet made up their minds about their election choice.

“I think a lot of people are still undecided and we definitely need every vote. It’s very tight. If we get nine more seats, we get a working majority. We lost 12 seats and we are in chaos,” he said.

Using a cricketing metaphor, he said: “We can smash it out of the ground. But we need to remember, this could be a very, very close election. This is one of the elections that could go down to the last over.”

Mr Johnson urged voters to consider the “starkness” of the choice between his One-Nation Conservative vision and Mr Corbyn’s brand of hard-Left socialism.

“Do they really want chaos, confusion and deadlock or do they want a really dynamic Conservative government that will really get on with things, deliver on their priorities and get Brexit done.

“People go on about trust in politics – look at what I say and what I deliver,” he said, pointing at his record in office as London mayor in cutting crime and building affordable houses while spearheading major projects including CrossRail and the 2012 London Olympics.

“We can bring back some of the spirit that brought the country together in 2012 when everybody was very enthused about the Olympics. We just need to get this thing done and move and recover our self-confidence,” he said.

In a scathing verdict on Mr Corbyn and his Left-wing shadow chancellor John McDonnell, the Prime Minister said: “They would bankrupt Britain.

“The difference between the Labour approach under Corbyn and McDonnell and previous Labour government is that they would start with an economic crisis rather than end with one and just keep going.

“Someone on £20,000 [a year] under Corbyn and McDonnell would pay another £1,000 of tax. Most people would pay another £2,4000 in tax. Labour’s plans always end up clobbering the people who could least afford it.”

He added: “The choice at this election is so stark.

“It’s a fork in the road.

“We can either go forwards with a One-Nation agenda which is about investing massively in the NHS, recovering our national self confidence, doing things differently, regenerating parts of the country that have felt left behind, tackling crime, investing in schools, spreading opportunity more fairly around the whole country, doing a fantastic One-Nation agenda or literally stuck in Groundhog Day, stuck in neutral, deadlock, division under Jeremy Corbyn and Nicola Sturgeon.

“My friends, there is only two mathematical possibilities: we get a working majority or else it is Corbyn-Sturgeon.”

Mr Johnson was keen to set out an optimistic vision of a country enjoying growing prosperity, improving public services and better living standards.

“We have a sacred mission to get it done and to bring the country together. It will be very exciting time,” he said.

“What I want is a golden age of investment and growth and that is what we are going to have.

“There is probably about £150billion of investment ready to come in just if I can get my deal over the line.

“What do you want for Christmas?

“Jeremy Corbyn and two referendums or £150billion?”

Mr Johnson repeated his mantra that his “fantastic” Brexit deal was ready to be reintroduced to Parliament before Christmas to ensure the country leaves the EU on January 31 next year if the Tories win the election.

“It’s there and it’s good to go, it is oven-ready,” he said.

“I’m not a great cook but we can get it in and out of Parliament for the second reading before you do your turkey.

“Daily Express readers won’t have to think about the sprouts.

“Parliament will complete the work by January 31 and then we’ll be done.”

Warming to the festive theme, he also joked about Mr Corbyn’s recent failure to remember whether he watched the Queen’s Speech on Christmas Day during an ITV interview.

“I’ll be standing to attention and singing God Save The Queen!” the Prime Minister said when asked what he would be doing at the time the annual message was broadcast.

“I will be watching it.

“Mr Corbyn is entitled to vagueness about the timetable on Christmas Day.

“Anyone is.

“But you are not entitled to vagueness about your policy on Brexit,” he said.
