Shocking way Boris could still force general election before EU summit Labour cannot stop

BORIS JOHNSON could still force an early general election before October 17 – the date he heads to Brussels for the next EU summit – with an “incredibly odd” parliamentary tactic the Labour Party would find hard to stop.

  • Brexit: Boris could still force a general election says expert

The Government is expected to table a motion on Monday asking MPs to approve a general election on October 15. But  could have yet another card up his sleeves as he could force opposition parties to vote against him in a vote of no confidence in his own government that would inevitably force a general election, claimed political correspondent Sebastian Payne. The Financial Times reporter explained: “One thing they might try and do is pass a very straight forward single clause bill that would say, notwithstanding the terms of the Fixed Term Parliament Act, which normally dictates how elections are held, we’ll have an election.

“Or, the other option that is also under consideration is calling a no confidence vote in Boris Johnson himself.

“Now, that would look incredibly odd for the Prime Minister and the Conservatives to have no confidence in themselves.

“But it only requires a single majority, so Labour couldn’t vote for that, they couldn’t vote to have confidence in Boris Johnson but they could abstain.

“And the Government could get a way of a simple 50-50 majority there.

“Now, on that basis, the 14 days cooling-off period which allows opposition parties to try and cobble together an alternative Government – and that could be an opportunity for Jeremy Corbyn or Mr Blackford to try and form a government to extend Article 50 and see that through.

If Mr Johnson loses a confidence vote next week, how could the opposition prove an alternative?

“But Parliament is prorogued, so this raises a very interesting question.

“If Mr Johnson loses a confidence vote next week, how could the opposition prove an alternative?

“They probably couldn’t, so we’d have that 14-day period and then spill into an election.”

The unprecedented move could, therefore, force Britons to go back to the polls on October 15 to decide who they want to be represented by at the EU summit.

On Thursday evening, the Prime Minister accused Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn of “destroying” the  negotiations with the EU and of forcing the Government to potentially agree to pay billions to the EU in return for a further extension to the Article 50 process.

Brexit: Claire Fox says Theresa May’s deal will be brought back

The Prime Minister called on the nation to force their MPs to vote in favour of a second motion the Government will put before the Commons on Monday to have an early general election on October 15.

He said:  “Hi folks, a lot has happened this week and I wanted to update you. I’ve been negotiating over the past five weeks to get us a new deal. EU leaders were willing to negotiate a deal because they knew we are going to leave on October 31st, deal or no deal.

“Last night Jeremy Corbyn and others voted to wreck the chance of a deal.

“Their new law tries to force the Government to go to Brussels, beg for another delay until 2020 or for as long as Brussels demands.

“People don’t want another pointless delay but this law is even worse.

Conservative seats at risk in the next general election

“Brussels could demand that I hand over billions of your money in return for this pointless delay.

“I refuse to do this. My view is that, if Parliament tries to force another pointless delay and I refuse to do that, then voters should decide what happens next.

“People can choose Jeremy Corbyn to be Prime Minister, go to Brussels on October 17 to delay Brexit again and do what Brussels wants.

“Or people can choose me to go to Brussels on October 17, try to negotiate a new deal, I’m confident that I can, but to leave on October 31 in all circumstances so the country can move on.

“Last night Jeremy Corbyn voted to stop you, the public, deciding this.

“He has now voted to destroy the negotiations, to delay again for no reason and to stop you deciding whether we delay or not.”
